Make sure you’ve got shelf-stable food and water for everyone in the house, including pets. The rule of thumb is a gallon per person per day. Freeze water bottles if you want cold water.
Make sure you have enough meds!
Make sure you have batteries, candles, flashlights, and a manual can opener.
Make sure your electronics, including backup batteries, are charged. Unplug things you don’t want fried in case of a power surge.
Don’t tape your windows, it doesn’t help and you’ll just be stuck scrubbing goo off of them later.
Put a mug of frozen water in it in your freezer with a quarter on top of it. If your freezer defrosts, the ice will melt and the quarter will sink and tell you you need to throw things out.
Get everything that’s not nailed to a foundation out of your yard. That dead branch hanging on by a thread? Time to get it down (it was probably time to do that three days ago, but now’s better than never).
Park away from powerlines and trees if you can. Rain makes the ground soft and then trees fall over.
Have an evacuation plan to a shelter. Evacuate if they’re telling you to.
If you start to flood, don’t go in your attic. You’ll get trapped if the water rises too high and you can’t hack through your roof. This happened to a lot of people in Texas and Louisiana. Get ON the roof.
Be safe, be well <3
What the fuck?
???? WHAT???
Ngl, “tropical storm in death valley” was not on my 2023 bingo card.
Drainage on our roads is shitty in SoCal, don’t attempt to drive through water deep enough to touch your bumpers and don’t attempt to walk across moving water, water only as deep as your ankles can knock you down and sweep you away.
Predicted wind speeds are similar to strong Santa Anas, so lock things down like you would for that, though keep in mind that yeah the combination of heavy rain and wind leads to more felled trees than just wind.
Take photos of the inside of your home now; flood insurance fucking sucks here and if you’re in a possible flood zone you want as much documentation of your home and belongings as possible in case you need to make a claim.
Freezing water bottles also means you’ve got a lot of ice in your freezer if power goes out, and safe potable water once it thaws, so freeze bottles of water to have something to keep your fridge and freezer cool and store more water regardless of if you want cold water.
fill your bathtub/ large containers/ buckets with water so you can flush the toilet if the power goes out. you can check the water level by popping the top off the tank
don’t walk through any standing/flood waters afterwards. they’re nasty and can hide downed power lines
unless there is an emergency do not drive through floodwaters. your car will stall
got fully locked out of youtube for Using Adblocker crimes today (got a pop-up saying I’d be locked out after 3 videos and then the video player locked down) and after some experimentation discovered that switching to my old YouTube profile that wasn’t created via a Google account has bypassed it.
i DON’T know if this has anything to do w the origins of the account or if it’s just that they’re not rolling the new features out to all accounts at once and I’ve found a loophole so ig we’ll see how long this works for!!
this is what i’ve learned so far:
it initially presents as a dismissable popup saying that adblockers will shortly no longer be allowed & then after a while you get the ‘three more videos and the player will be blocked’ message followed by the player locking down.
YouTube is rolling out the new measures gradually so if you haven’t had any issues it’s likely to be bcos it hasn’t hit your account yet; comments along the lines of 'i used this browser + adblock combo’ are therefore not very helpful.
if using uBlock you seem to be able to bypass it by logging out but this does have the downside of having to use YouTube logged out. it apparently also works in private browsing mode.
I posted the above workaround in a reddit thread on the subject and someone else confirmed that making a new account worked for them.
I’m HOPING that someone will come up with a permanent workaround before it hits my old account but given how aggressive this seems to be I’m afraid this might be the thing that makes me finally bite the bullet and switch to spotify :(
switching over to my old account HAS broken my recommendations but less so than logging out altogether so could be worse!!
ok further research conducted, the following adblockers are defo detected:
ublock origin
adblock plus
total adblock
adblock
ghostery
adblocker for youtube
adblocker ultimate
adguard adblocker
according to comments seen on reddit the following can also trip it:
enhancer for youtube
vivaldi built in adblocker
i am currently having success with an extension called adlock but it’s not proving very effective.
ETA: i use firefox + ublock origin; i’ve seen a number of people speculating that it’s a chrome or chromium issue and sad to say it is not :(
a little more information regarding the maui wildfires:
medical workers on the ground are describing finding hundreds of bodies. the current death toll in the media is, unfortunately, only a fraction of the reality
hospital workers are describing injuries and trauma as if survivors had come out of a warzone
thousands are still missing
an apartment complex for the elderly was lost. not everyone could get out. people were saying goodbye to loved ones over the phone
people who did get out of lahaina were leaving with ashes covering their faces and nothing but the clothes on their backs. people are losing everything.
hotels are still operating. hotels are still operating. they are not the ones offering shelters or housing or food. even bowling alleys are offering shelter, but hotels have the audacity to build on burial sites but not open their doors to local families who have lost everything.
Muriel Fahrion, the creator of Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears, was under a work for hire contract when she created them and as a result has received no residuals over the last 40+ years. If you like either of those properties, consider purchasing something from her website. She has art and cute jewelry!
white ppl have no concept of the pain of finding a community that you belong to and then discovering the deeply entrenched racism in said community
coming out as an nb dyke was freeing don’t get me wrong but discovering how racist white wlw can be takes away some of the joy of that experience. we’re fetishized or shunned or demonized or mocked or all of the above. then I see and hear white wlw saying shit about how welcoming wlw are like they haven’t been pushing us out all this time
I’m not saying this is a problem exclusive to wlw by the way, this happens in literally every community that has white people in it. I’ve dealt with racism from white people as a member of the disabled community, from white women in feminist spaces, in activist groups I worked with, etc.
white people need to take a good long look at racism in their communities before they start proclaiming them to be welcoming spaces. because I can guarantee that if your community has white people, your community has racism
several jewish people have mentioned in the tags that antisemitism functions in a similar way and has similar impacts, so I think it’s worth adding that jewish people are racialized and ostracized in essentially the same way
everything that I described above is an experience that people of colour share with jewish people
Wow wtf HIV/AIDS was discovered by Flossie Wong-Staal, an Chinese-American woman, and she’s the reason the HIV test even exists. AND THEN she invented the molecular knife that lead to treatments for HIV/AIDS. And she’s STILL ALIVE. We don’t hear about the contributions of Women of Color enough, my word. Madness.
